Jerry makes me smile when he sings

"Stepped up to Stagger Lee at the bar, said buy me a gin fizz love"

So whats the best version of this little chestnut ?
Opinions?

maybe not the best stagger lee, but i like the one played at saratoga 6-27-85. it followed a hilarious moment when the band had to stop playing and ask fans to stop hanging from the balcony. seemed appropriate for a song about frontier justice. ps. don't let that other guy discourage you.

Ah. Stagger Lee. One of my favorite stories many sang. As for a nice Dead version, and it's funny you asked this because I was blasting this the other day is from 4-7-87. A radio broadcast and I remember all of us sitting around enjoying this show. This SL has a wicked jam at the end. Jerry was really was playing well in 87 IMO after the health scare the year before. Also note one of the best jams at the end of AM Dew. Download the whole show. Even the jam in the too often played Bertha will get you going! LOL! Here u go!

If you hurry on down to http://prewarblues.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_prewarblues_archive.html you can hear how this song has been performed over the years. Stagger Lee Week began on Monday 14 March and is now over. However, it seems the tracks are still available for download but will probably be taken down soon. You may very well find the "Best Stagger Lee".

There are versions by Mississippi John Hurt, Bama, Wilson Pickett, Toast, Frank Hutchison, Bob Dylan, David Miller, Long "Cleve" Reed and Little Harvey Hull, Taj Mahal, Lloyd Price, Hogman Maxey, Lucious Curtis and Willie Ford, Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington and His Kentucky Club Orchestra, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, The Clash, The Rulers, Dr. John, Bassholes, Kruger Brothers, Archibald, Bert Garvin (with J.P. Fraley), Art Hodes, Cliff Edwards, Waring's Pennsylvanians, James Brown, Bert Jansch, Professor Longhair, Nick Cave, Snatch and the Poontangs, Doc Watson, Dave Bartholomew, Black Keys, Ben Andrews, Dave Van Ronk, Beck, Sly and The Family Stone, Furry Lewis, Ma Rainey and Sol Hoopii

Widen your scope and check out this brilliant collection before the files disappear. Surprisingly, none of the contributors rated anything by this obscure artist called Jerry.

Best stagger lee? Mmmm....off the top of my head, check out the stagger lee from miami 1978. It's pretty solid. Also, listen to the stagger lee from buffalo 89, it's pretty good.
hope this helps.
sperry.

If you'd like to hear a great later day version, I have always love the 3/24/93 version. The guitar solo in this one just flows nicely.

I gotta agree. '93 was the year that Jerry left the acoustic midi voicing on most of the time. I was present for two great Stagger Lees that year: LA sports arena in December, also Soldier Field in June.

Hearing this was always a treat for me and for some reason I only got to hear a few of them during 10 years of GD shows. Just luck...

Check out the version by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It's absolutely sinister.

I wanted to mention also in this show there's a moment when they start Hell in a Bucket. Bobby decides the band is playing too fast (isn't he the one who gives the 4 count for his tunes?lol)If you listen close you can hear Bobby yelling to the band SLOW DOWN! They didn't so he actually stops the song and announces "WE'RE GONNA TRY THIS AGAIN" and they start it up all over. IMO a moment only the GD could create and get away with. God I love this show! LOL and have a grate day!

Sorry about the jerky replies you've been getting. Where the hell did those people come from? I'll entertain your query. One Stagger Lee you gotta check out is from 7/1/85. this whole first set is a mindblower. I also never tire of hearing the version from 7/12/90. And for some seventies love, I'd check out 10/21/78 or 11-24-78. Have fun with that. Those are great shows and great versions of a rippin' tune.

I'm sure almost every version is here. Why don't you try deciding for yourself instead of having someone else tell you what to like.

never hurts to have a point of reference for a tune that's been played a million times...

Agreed, but that's not what this post is asking. There is a huge difference between asking for a reference point and asking to be told the "best."

Hey dealint I thought it would be an interesting discussion to hear what others thought was their favorite version ,best, of this song. Apparently you find that there are better things for us to do. Why dont you go cure cancer or stop world hunger or what ever it is you do when your not complaining about what I post on the forum of my favorite website. A couple of guys after you seem to think it is an interesting thing to talk about but apparently you are to good for this. Thanks for being a complete jerk about it. Hope you have a good day yelling at girlscouts or kmocking over lemonade stands.

I wish Delia knew where you worked, she could take care of some business for me.
